Naperville Resident Launches Website: The Truth About Smart Grids

Raising public awareness and finding solutions for concerns related to invasions of privacy, data security, and health effects.

One of Naperville's residents, Kit Weaver, has launched his own website, TheTruthAboutSmartGrids.org, to help raise public awareness regarding issues related to the smart grid, including privacy, cyber security, and health effects. As stated by GAO Report #GAO-11-117, "Consumers are not adequately informed about the benefits, costs, and risks associated with smart grid systems."

Kit says he has become frustrated that utilities and smart grid advocates tout only the possible benefits but never mention the costs and drawbacks of the smart grid. The smart grid advocates also attempt to marginalize concerned consumers whenever issues are raised. He hopes his website can help provide some balance to the millions of dollars being spent by smart grid proponents. While there are several websites that oppose smart meters, Kit felt there was a need for a more a broad-based website to highlight issues related to the overall electrical grid modernization.

Kit's website will also focus on the potential hazards of all wireless devices. Kit says, "I have reviewed sufficient evidence to conclude that cell phone exposure is probably harmful to health. The more that people begin to realize this, the more open they will be to accept that other wireless devices may be hazardous as well. I prefer not to be critical of wireless smart meters in isolation."

BC Hydro smart meters provoke class action lawsuit

Opponents of smart meters are preparing a class action lawsuit

against BC Hydro, alleging installation of the high-tech devices has led to thousands of health, safety and privacy concerns over the last two years. Earlier this year, BC Hydro said it would not install smart meters without the permission of residents, but those behind the lawsuit say that is not what happened.
